About Relate
Relate is the UK's best-known provider of relationship counselling and the national specialist in intimate relationships. Every year we deliver high-quality counselling and therapeutic services to thousands of clients, making it possible for more people to make informed, realistic choices about love, sex and relationships.
We are committed to practice that is non-judgemental, culturally sensitive, and responsive to the diverse backgrounds, identities and lived experiences of our clients.
Relate sits within Family Action, a national charity that has supported people through change, challenge and crisis for 150 years. The family charity and the relationship specialists - together we are stronger.
Our clinical culture is grounded in reflective practice, ethical rigour and a genuine respect for the complexity of intimate relationships.
We are now growing our clinical team and are recruiting to multiple Relate Counsellor roles and three Clinical Supervisor roles (see our other advert for the Clinical Supervisor vacancy, ID 1887). Whether your strength lies in direct therapeutic work with individuals and couples, or in supporting and developing other practitioners through supervision, this is an opportunity to be part of the UK's leading relationship counselling service at a pivotal moment of growth and transformation.
These roles are for you if…
• You are committed to safe, ethical and inclusive practice shaped by client need.
• You value reflective practice and see supervision as central to doing your best work.
• You are confident working with complexity and risk and know when and how to escalate concerns.
• You bring a psychodynamic and systemic understanding of relationships to your work.
• You want to help shape the future of relationship therapy at national scale.
About the Relate Counsellor Role
As a Relate Counsellor, you will deliver high quality, clinically effective relationship therapy to individuals and couples, including short interventions such as One Session Therapy. You will work with clients facing a wide range of challenges, from everyday relationship difficulties to complex presentations, supported throughout by individual and group supervision.
Hours and working pattern: Counsellor roles are available at 21 or 28 hours per week. Your working week will include one morning plus either three evenings, or two evenings and a Saturday. We are particularly keen to hear from counsellors who are able to work Saturdays.
You will:
• Deliver safe, evidence-informed relationship therapy to individuals and couples.
• Keep client safety at the centre of your practice, carrying out welfare checks and identifying, recording and escalating safeguarding concerns promptly.
• Manage your client diary and maintain accurate case notes, assessments and risk records on our case management system.
• Take part in individual supervision, case supervision groups and counsellor drop-in meetings.
• Offer non-judgemental, culturally sensitive counselling that responds to the diverse backgrounds, identities and lived experiences of our clients.
• Keep your professional body membership, CPD and safeguarding training up to date.
About You
(for full details, see the job description and person specification)
You will bring:
• A Level 5 / Column B (or above) qualification in Relationship Therapy from Relate or an equivalent training provider.
• Training in One Session Therapy from a recognised provider, or completion of Relate short intervention training incorporating One Session Therapy.
• Full clinical accredited membership of a recognised professional body (e.g. BACP, UKCP, NCPS, COSRT), or working towards accreditation.
• Significant post-qualifying experience in couple counselling and sex therapy, with 200 hours or more of post-qualification supervised clinical practice.
• Experience of working psychodynamically and systemically with individuals and couples, including clients whose presentations are complex or high risk.
• Confidence using client management systems and following safeguarding and risk management protocols.
We are interested in hearing from counsellors who are also trained in Psychosexual Therapy (PST).
